WATER QUALITY - OUR POLICY

The River Don, like most of the UK's rivers, has been subject to excessive sewage discharges in recent years. Thankfully, being shallow, moving water, the river has not suffered too badly from these discharges and they have had very little impact on our paddling activities at Oughtibridge. The widespread publicity associated with this issue may now hopefully result in improved treatment practice and more stringently applied laws to prevent, or at least limit, these discharges

However, in the meantime, as a club, we shall endeavour to take all possible precautions to ensure the safety of paddlers on our home waters. Yorkshire Water now provide near real-time information on discharges from their sites via this website:

Yorkshire Water - Storm Overflow Map (arcgis.com) Water quality

This will be referred to weekly (or more frequently depending on planned events) and should a discharge occur which may compromise the quality of the river water, then appropriate action will be undertaken which may result in events being postponed or cancelled.
